Ask the public at large what they think about E numbers, and the response will usually be that they’re ‘bad for you’ or ‘not natural’.

Then tell the same people that there are, for example, several E-numbers in a tomato, and that some of the most common food ingredients that have been used for centuries have E numbers – baking soda is E500 and Vitamin C E300 – and wait for their jaws to hit the floor…..
